Frequently asked questions

Here you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our services and Remeo as a company.

About Remeo

Remeo was founded in 1964 under the name Sohu, a waste management company. Over the years, we’ve operated under several names, including Sita and Sita Suez. We adopted the name Remeo in 2017.

The word Remeo is Latin and means "to return." Our company name reflects the purpose of our business — to return waste materials back into circulation and reuse them as new resources.

Remeo is owned by the Finnish family company Hartwall Capital. Remeo became part of the Hartwall family ownership in 2016, when the company was acquired from the international environmental services provider Suez.

Waste management for corporate customers

The recycling rate indicates how large a share of generated waste can be reused as recycled materials instead of being sent to incineration or landfill. The more waste is directed for reuse, for example as recycled materials in production, the higher the recycling rate. A company or household can influence its recycling rate by sorting waste carefully. Sorting can take place either at the source or at a facility, and the quality of sorting significantly affects the recyclability of the waste.

At the source, different types of waste should be placed in the designated collection containers. At the facility, additional materials can be separated from energy waste, plastic packaging, and mixed construction waste. Combining different sorting methods often leads to the best outcome. After sorting, high-quality waste materials can continue their journey in the material cycle: they are refined into recycled raw materials for industry or used to replace virgin raw materials, for example in infrastructure construction. In the case of construction and demolition waste, the term 'material recovery rate' is often used instead of recycling rate.

A waste transfer document is a legally required record needed when transporting certain types of waste from one location to another — typically, for example, from the site of waste generation to a treatment facility. A transfer document is required for the transportation of, among others, construction and demolition waste, hazardous waste, and various types of sludge.

The document includes details about the type, quantity, and origin of the waste, the date and locations of the transfer, as well as the producer, transporter, and recipient of the waste, and the method of treatment. It must be confirmed at different stages of the transfer process. Preparing the transfer document is the responsibility of the waste holder before the transport begins.

At Remeo, the transfer document is included as part of our waste management service. You can access it through Remeo’s customer reporting, and we also submit the information to the national SIIRTO register.

Waste management costs consist of the container emptying service (typically €/unit or €/visit), the waste processing fee (typically €/unit or €/ton), and any potential container rental fees (typically €/month or €/day). Additional costs may arise from services such as destruction certificates or the mandatory waste transfer document. A transfer document must always be prepared when handling hazardous waste or construction waste.

The waste hierarchy is defined in the EU Waste Framework Directive and refers to the order of priority for waste-related actions. At the top of the hierarchy is waste prevention and the reduction of the harmfulness of waste, for example by extending product lifespans and optimizing material use. Items that would otherwise become waste should, according to the hierarchy, be prepared for reuse elsewhere. Reuse means that an item can be used again for its original purpose, for example by repairing it.

If reuse is not possible, the next priority is to recycle the waste materials. At Remeo, we process waste in a way that maximizes the share of materials that can be returned to circulation as raw materials for new products. If recycling is not feasible, the waste should be recovered in other ways, such as for energy. If recovery is not possible, the waste must be directed to final disposal — either to a landfill or incineration without energy recovery.

Remeo ensures that our customers’ waste is handled appropriately through every stage of the waste hierarchy. We help businesses identify their role at each level of the hierarchy, find new recycling methods and destinations for their waste, and increase their recycling rate. We also support and train our customers to improve their sorting skills, ensuring waste is sorted efficiently and with high quality.

Waste management for private customers

We charge for an empty trip when we have attempted to empty a waste container, but the service could not be completed due to reasons beyond our control. Such reasons may include, for example, another vehicle blocking access to the container or a public road being closed due to construction work.

The container emptying interval is always calculated based on weeks, so a monthly emptying actually means every four weeks. This usually results in one emptying per month, but in some cases, there may be two in the same month. For example, if the container is emptied on March 1st, the next emptying will take place on March 29th, meaning there are two emptyings in the same month.

Material reception

Business customers can bring waste to Remeo’s processing facilities using our scale services either by calling our customer service or independently via mobile weighing. If you are visiting our facility for the first time or need assistance at the scale, you can complete the weighing process by calling to our customer service. Mobile weighing is done using the mScales app, and we recommend this method for customers who visit our facilities regularly.

Remeo’s processing facilities accept waste from business customers across Finland. Request a quote for waste reception from our sales team or customer service.

At our waste processing facilities, we primarily accept only one type of waste per load. Please ensure that the waste is properly sorted before arrival and that you inform our scale service of the correct contents of your load. While on the facility premises, it is important to pay attention to occupational safety, which includes the use of personal protective equipment and driving safely by adjusting your speed to the situation and being mindful of working machinery.

Waste processing

Most types of waste materials can be processed at Remeo’s waste processing facilities. Our nationwide network of processing facilities ensures the optimal treatment of materials for reuse and recovery. Additionally, our facilities are somewhat specialized in handling different materials — for example, our Mega facility in Vantaa specializes in optical separation of plastics and robotic sorting of construction waste.

Environmental permits form the foundation of our operations. Our processing facilities operate under official supervision, and we plan our activities in accordance with the conditions of environmental permits, continuously monitoring compliance. We regularly report our operations to the authorities.

Fire safety at a waste processing facility involves several factors. Our facilities are equipped with initial fire extinguishing equipment, and our staff regularly participates in fire safety training. We aim to process incoming waste as quickly as possible and avoid unnecessary storage. We monitor the temperature of waste piles using, for example, thermal cameras. In addition, we guide our customers to sort their waste correctly — for instance, batteries pose a significant fire hazard and should not be mixed with regular waste due to the risk of ignition.

Raw materials

Recycled raw material refers to material obtained from recoverable waste. In practice, this means raw material derived from recyclable waste, which can be refined into new products. Using recycled raw materials supports the realization of a circular economy. The need for virgin natural resources decreases when recycled materials are used in production.

We believe that waste should be seen as a valuable resource, and its reuse potential must be utilized. That’s why we offer recycled raw materials for industrial use, reducing the need for virgin natural resources. Through our operations, we aim to promote a more sustainable future and increase Finland’s recycling rate.

We sell the recycled raw materials we produce for use in various industrial sectors, either directly or through our partner network. For example, many of the fibres we sell are used as raw materials in the forest industry. Our raw materials are also used in energy production.
